Well-known blogger Doyin Richards, who writes on the subject of fatherhood, makes his picture-book debut with this celebration of daddies and all the many activities they participate in with their children. Illustrated with photographs of fathers with their children, all supplied by the author's followers on social media, the book concludes with a rhyming pean to a father's devotion.
I appreciate the intention behind I Wonder: Celebrating Daddies Doin' Work, and welcome the diversity of the show more dads depicted in the photographs. That said, I did find myself wondering as I read just who the target audience here is. The format suggests young children, but the content feels aimed more at fathers themselves. I'd be curious to know how this one goes over with the picture-book set. show less

This book is good for a primary age group. It describes a boy from Sierra Leone facing adversity to come to American and become a doctor. As inspirational as it sounds, it's a fairly simple book without a ton of depth to it. I might have it in my classroom, but it certainly wouldn't be a priority. It could be used to teach about racism and encourage students to push back against difficulty.
This book would be good for primary students. This book is "Watch Me" by Doyin Richards, illustrated by Joe Cepeda, and published in 2021. This book is about a young boy from West Africa and immigrated to the United States to follow his dreams. He did good in school, made friends, and embraced his new home while also missing his home in Africa. He got made fun of, was told he couldn't do it, and succeeded despite what people said. He said "watch me" when people told him he couldn't do it. I show more think this is a good book to teach kids about immigration, but also has a good lesson that you can do anything you set your mind to despite what other people might say. show less
A Story of Immigration and Inspiration by Doyin Richards is an inspiring and heartfelt story about a young boy named Doyin, who moves from Nigeria to the United States with his family. Through the lens of Doyin's experiences, the book shows the challenges and triumphs of being an immigrant and adjusting to life in a new country. It focuses on themes of perseverance, courage, and the importance of education, all told in an engaging and uplifting way.
This book is perfect for grades 4 to 7, as show more it's written in a way that is easy to understand but also full of meaningful lessons. What I really enjoyed about the book was how it made the reader reflect on the strength it takes to leave everything behind and start over, while also celebrating the importance of believing in oneself and pushing through challenges.
The illustrations and storytelling style make it an enjoyable read for both younger and older students, with a positive and hopeful message that can inspire anyone, no matter their background. show less
