This is an excellent biography of a multitalented man who is best known as a film music composer. He also wrote serious music and was the conductor of the CBS symphony orchestra for many years. He championed the works of unjustly neglected masters like Joachim Raff. His 1970 recording of Raff's "Lenore" symphony (which he financed out of his own pocket) was singlehandedly responsible for the Raff renaissance that we are experiencing today.
