So I had the bug to try reading more audiobooks and I only got as far as 2...for now. After thoroughly loving Yes Please by Amy Poehler I was all set for some more hilarity. To that end I picked up Grace Helbig's Grace & Style: The Art of Pretending You Have It. This is part memoir (a very small part) and part irreverent fashion and beauty guide. If you're unfamiliar with Grace she's a comedian with a super funny YouTube channel (as well as a YouTube series with fellow comedian Mamrie Hart) show more and this is actually her second book. The book starts off with Grace relating some very personal stories about her struggles with body image but lest you get the idea this is a very serious book it's more about trying to take things less seriously and accepting yourself flaws and all. I really enjoyed the personal anecdotes and how they related to her changing opinions and tastes when it comes to mainstream fashion and beauty standards. She also discusses how differently she views herself now that she has increased visibility due to her career. I think this would be especially good for a young woman in high school or just starting college as that's when we're most vulnerable to the pressures from media. (Note: I don't ever think we're completely immune to it but I do think there are times in our development when it's an especially powerful influence.) Because I consumed this book via audiobook format I felt I was at a bit of a disadvantage when she talked at length about specific beauty products, tips, and how-to's because I'm fairly sure the physical book had a plethora of visual aids. I do want to point out that there was a large portion of the book dedicated to a 'sweatpants diary' which I suppose was meant to be a metaphor for the pressures of the media effecting how we perceive fashion but I found it exceedingly odd. (Also, I found myself nodding off more than once during it.) For those that need reminding that fashion and beauty in general are completely subjective this is a great resource. For someone looking for a hilarious pick-me-up it's a bit short of the mark. 5/10 show less
Just to be clear, I would probably read anything that Grace Helbig writes. She's one of the people I look up to and is just super funny. In this book, she gives her own style advice which is more accessible than most of those I guess you would call them self-help books.
Helbig just has a way of being able to entertain but be relatable at the same time. She loves sweatpants, she lives in t-shirts and is always looking for the casual way to be fashionable. As someone who has always struggled show more fashionwise, I loved this book. Although I felt some parts were super boring because they weren't things I cared about, the advice she gives throughout the book is actually really awesome. It's a great book to just flip through and read the things you vare about and maybe feel a little less bad about your lack of fashion sense. show less

I've been a fan of Grace Helbig for a while now. I first discovered her when she and her friend Michelle were making videos together. They always managed to cheer me up on my darkest days. Even then Grace was also making solo videos, but for some reason at the time I didn't watch those as often. I have no idea why.
Well, Grace's style of humor is now in book form, a mix of genuine life advice and hilarity that will make anyone feel good. If you enjoy Grace's videos, you'll enjoy this book. show more Along with advice on dating, making friends, decorating as an adult, some unique cooking recipes, managing a digital life, and even how to get over break-ups and hangovers; Grace also provides a series of photos and stills from some of her videos. It's easy to tell she had fun putting this book together.
One of the things I love about Grace, and this comes through in Grace's Guide, is her general attitude. A phrase that gets repeated several times here is "make it fun." If you could boil down Grace's life philosophy into one sentence, I think that would be it. This whole book epitomizes "make it fun," so do yourself and favor and pick up a copy for yourself or that friend who could use a good chuckle. Definitely worth it. show less

A hilarious, fun-to-read book.
In the same way that Hannah Hart's My Drunk Kitchen is less of an actual cookbook and more of a fun-filled, joke-riddled, positive outlook on life, Grace Helbig's Grace's Guide is not a traditional self-help book, but is still a very fun and fulfilling read.
Much of the advice is a no-brainer, but is related in a funny way with plenty of humorous anecdotes. The text is sure to make you smile and brighten your day with its optimism even in not so good situations. show more
Reading this book is like talking to a good friend and is sure to make you feel a little bit better about life.
A lot of the book is just silly, complete with pictures, making for a nice, easy, feel-good read. show less
