This was painful.

A story about a bunch of losers living in Soho in the 70’s. - Sex, drugs, rock ‘n roll.

What could be worse? A book about “successful” investment bankers, bond traders and accountants living in Manhattan today.
Anna grows up in Greece in the turbulent post-war years as the daughter of a major, "handsome and fierce". The mother married in her teens unaware of the army life that awaits her; posted from outpost to outpost she comes to hate the life that has trapped her. Through the eyes of Anna we discover and experience the world: trees, animals, adults and children, conflict even violence, love and hate, with the intensity of a self-assured and observant child who wants to live up to the show more expectations of her father "to act like a man" - asserting herself even in and through conflict with the father.

I am fascinated by this book,. The narration has an intensity I like. I could not put it down. Now re-reading it. (IIX-24)
