The suggestion that Revelation was written by John the Baptist is way too out there for the Anchor Bible to have included in their series. It's one thing to be stretched with different or even unusual ideas, it's another to have such a radical (and remarkably unlikely) extreme tied to something as foundational as authorship! It rendered this book mostly unusable during my last preaching series through Revelation since I either needed to commit to Ford's line of logic - and so stick with this show more text alone in my thinking - or else leave it effectively untouched while I surrounded myself with other sources. I chose the latter; you should too. show less
I liked the author's thesis a lot: St. John the Baptist wrote Revelation, not St. John the Evangelist. The work is primarily Jewish, with a little Christian symbolism tacked on the front and end.
A volume of The Anchor Bible, this translation is an attempt to make the latest scholarship available to the layman.
