Author, a journalist, began attempt to solve mysterty of the disapearance of Amelia Earhart in 1960. The account of a supposed eye witness who spotted Earhart and her co pilot on Saipan in 1937 got him going. Supposedly the Japanese, who controlled Saipan at that time, imprisoned the pair and quickly executed them. This book tells the story of Goerner's investigation. He describes the difficulty of finding tiny Howland Island in the vast expanse of the Pacific under less than optimal weather show more conditions...overcast skys and primitive equipment. Makes point that A.E. flew into Pacific just five days before Japan attacked China in 1937 - so it would have been a sensitive time for them militarily. If a navigational mistake was made (it must have been a big one but not impossible given weather and equipment) and the pair landed on Saipan - it was the wrong time. show less
