The author sets out to critically examine the conventional wisdom of playwriting, particularly the reliance on Aristotle that has become the standard go to source. He examines the various rules of playwriting one by one, and discusses the evolution of that rule over time. Very few of the things we take for granted now have been a part of playwriting until relatively recently; our traditions actually came about starting in the Seventeenth Century, and have continued to shift since that time show more as plays move with the changes in society. A very good source, but it loses half a star for the poor editing. Frequent misuse of commas, words left out of sentences, sentence fragments that seem to start out to say one thing but fail to complete the thought - this jarred. show less
