Short biography
Elizabeth Florence Stucley was born in Devonshire, England, where her ancestors had lived for more than 600 years. Her parents were Sir Hugh Nicholas Granville Stucley, a baronet, and his wife Gladys Bankes. She drove for the French Army during World War II, worked for the Conservative Party, and became a teacher and headmistress. In 1955, she married John Grant Lawrence Northmore. She wrote six novels for young people between 1946 and 1970, many informed by her own experiences. She also made a journey to the Hebrides, following the route of Samuel Johnson and James Boswell, which led to the book A Hebridean Journey with Boswell and Johnson (1956).

This was a book we read in class when I was about 10, and I liked it so much I borrowed it from the library to read again. About a group of kids living on a council estate in the 1960s, when people were relatively glad to move onto estates...!
