This was cute enough, though even for infants (as distinct from my highly verbal toddler) I think I'd've been adding in flourishes ("He was hiding UNDER THE BRIDGE! He was hiding BEHIND THE TREE!" It's train cars and they're hiding), because the repetition they clamour for would still be there and the lack of any variation whatsoever, as at present, is dispiriting.
The main character, Max, wants to be friends with Susan who communicates using sign language. Max attempts to learn sign language. This book is wonderful in encouraging students to interact with students of disabilities or of different languages.
This book is bullshit because every page is a picture of some animal like "I can see a green frog, I can see a brown bear," but there are only six pages. They don't even cover all the basic colours. As soon as your kid gets excited about what's coming next it's over.
MAX CELEBRATES MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY is a challenge for me.
In fact, it makes me feel stupid. Why? Because I can't for the life of me think of why you would share a book with a youngster about how people will show slides and give speeches.
For you see, despite the title, we don't get to see Max celebrate squat. What we get are pages about how other people celebrate, and how Max's principal is going to stand up in front of a room full of children and adults, and talk and talk about show more MLK.

At the event, there are lots of
students and teachers.
There are lots of parents too.
The principal shows pictures
of Martin Luther King, Jr.
She says Martin Luther King, Jr.
studied a lot. He went to college
and learned many things.

Really? Is it just me or is this sort of a stupid concept. This book does not talk about the civil rights movement or MLK except in the broadest and most useless terms (like he studied... a lot! He gave speeches... all over the United States.)
This is a book at the second grade reading level. I can't recommend it to anyone unless they want to prepare a child in advance for the horror of slide presentations.
There are many better books. You can find some here --http://www.pinterest.com/goodbooks4kids/martin-luther-king-jr-books -- if you are desperate. show less
