Engravings Torn from Insomnia (Lannan Translations Selection Series) (Spanish Edition) by Olga Orozco
I will confess, at first I thought this collection was going to be Not For Me. I thought it was Too Metaphysical, Too Serious Literature, Too Surreal, but in Serious Poetry Ways. And then it was like I turned a corner and I had learned how to read it, and I LOVED IT?
It's always a danger of this project, when I am picking books from countries I have read zero or one or two books from, they are almost always ripped from their context, from the communities in which they wrote, and I knew show more literally nothing about Orozco except that she was on a list of South American Women Poets You Should Know. A lot of times I prefer to go in without context. I almost always skip over any introduction or prelude because I don't want to be told what to feel or think about a thing until I have read it. Then IF I go back to the introduction later, I find it more rewarding.
I am not going to tell you what to think or feel about Orozco, but I will tell you that this collection (selected from the body of her work, which spanned decades), is poetry of omens and forces personified, poems of transformation and rites, of certain fates and soul's yearning, with both fairy tale logic and Biblical imagery.

Child, this is only a story of witches and wolves,
engravings torn from the insomnia of distant grandmothers.
And now, where are you going with this still rope that carries us on?
Where am I going in this boat, alone against heaven's other side?
Who throws me out of my own heart like a blind stone
against stone waves
and unfolds roaring wings that beat like a flag?
Silence. The snow of another story is slipping through your fingers.

El editor llama la atención sobre los temas esotéricos que, según él, presiden toda la obra de esta poetisa argentina y que ya se encuentran en el primer poema de la antología. Yo no he visto ni tanto esoterismo (lo hay con cierta frecuencia, es verdad, pero no tanto) y lo del primer poema suena a que no tenía ganas de leer más. En todo caso, Orozco insiste varias veces en la búsqueda metafísica, especialmente de su propio ser más allá del propio cuerpo, y poco a poco va derivando show more en ramalazos más o menos religiosos que a veces se hacen invocaciones explícitas a Dios. Pero es una poetisa oscura y difícil, que a ratos me ha obligado a meramente pasar la mirada por el texto, no a leerlo. Así se quedará. show less
