This little book is a delight - a veritable souvenir of London and the British Museum. As the blurb on the back cover states, it's "A fascinating section of quotes, poems and anecdotes about the life and times of London, its inhabitants and their myriad activities, beautifully illustrated with works of art and specially commissioned photography" - and that's no hyperbole! Inevitably some of the illustrations are familiar, or of familiar subjects, but there's the little-known too, such as a show more painting of the Port of London (1862) by a Japanese artist who never visited the capital, the Great Dustheap at King's Cross (1840) and a wonderful painting of Primrose Hill (1974) by Frank Auerbach. show less
