Panting For Glory: The Mississippi Rifles in the Mexican War (Volume 151) (Williams-Ford Texas A&M University Military History Series) by Richard Bruce Winders
This is your basic nuts-and-bolts regimental monograph that contrasts Jeff Davis' 1st Mississippi Rifles with its sister unit the 2nd Mississippi, and examines the difference that Davis' competent (if dictatorial) leadership & political connections made. Apart from that units such as these can be seen as the predecessors of the volunteer regiments that were raised for service during the late unpleasantness of the 1860s. Actually, where Winders is at his best is at examining the internal show more politics and stresses of the two regiments, as it just brings home how loosely woven together American society was in the period in question. show less
