Lola Kosáryné Réz (1892–1984)

Lola Kosáryné Réz was born in Selmecbánya, present-day Banská Štiavnica, Slovakia. During her childhood, the family moved to numerous times, eventually settling in Budapest, Hungary. She returned to her hometown to attend high school and was married there in 1912. She began writing poetry as a child and published her first stories at age 15. Her first novel, Filomena, won the Athenaeum Prize in 1920 and made her one of the most popular writers of the period between the two world wars. Between 1921 and 1944, she published 38 novels for children and young adults. She also translated books from French and English into Hungarian, including works by Agatha Christie and Pearl Buck. Her son Domokos Kosáry became a distinguished historian.
