Quite a specialist book, I suppose, but very interesting indeed to trace the routes as they were then before nationalisation in 1948.
The opening line of the book states that 'This is a Festival year, and Britain is proudly 'at home' to the world'. The endpapers are reminiscent of the Festival of Britain in terms of design. The colour photo of the driver in the cab with fire in the background is striking and there are many excellent black and white photos.
Excellent cover design, blue, red, yellow, black and white with captions in capitals: Full head of steam, Not blowing off etc.
Official hand-book of stations; including junctions, sidings, colleries, works, etc., on the railways in Great Britain and ireland: showing the station accommodation, crane power, county, Region executive or company, and position by British Railways
The RCH was absorbed into the State upon Nationalisation of the railways, although there were a few anomalous undertakings, and by the time of publication this book also listed railways in the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland. This is one of the last editions of this book before it was completely superceded.
