This is the story of a person who is supposedly the woman who passed herself off as the Grand Duchess Anastasia. It was proved after her death that she was not part of the Romanovs. There seems little proof in the book that this Polish factory worker was the deluded Anastasia. Although the story bounces along quite nicely delving deeper and deeper into her past culminating in a tragedy. The link is tenuous between the girl in Poland and in Germany.

Inventive, plausible, hugely entertaining – involving barnacle resistant paint for ships

Als blijkt dat zij tbc heeft wordt de 18-jarige Irene opgenomen in een Iers sanatorium, maar als zij na zes jaar genezen is laat haar familie niets meer van zich horen. Omdat ze bang is voor de buitenwereld blijft zij als keukenhulp in het sanatorium, tot zij trouwt met de zoon van een oude patiënte. Hij blijkt impotent te zijn en de enige manier om het kind te krijgen dat zij zo graag wil is voor haar het stelen van een baby. Zonder medeweten van haar man doet zij dat en pas na drie jaar show more komt het uit, wordt het meisje gevonden en teruggebracht naar haar echte moeder, voor wie de diefstal vergaande gevolgen had. Als Irene haar gevangenisstraf heeft uitgezeten rest haar niets anders dan terug te keren naar het sanatorium, waar ze weer als keukenhulp kan komen werken. Dit is de wel heel indringende debuutroman van de jonge Ierse schrijfster, bekroond met de 1995 Lannan Literary Award. show less
