- Doris McCarthy was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and attended the Ontario College of Art. She became a teacher after graduation and continued to teach until retiring in 1972. She also traveled extensively and painted the landscapes of many countries, although she was probably best known for her Canadian landscapes and her painting of Arctic icebergs. Her work was exhibited and collected in Canada and abroad, in both public and private art galleries. She was the author of three autobiographies, covering different stages of her life: A Fool in Paradise (1990), The Good Wine (1991), and Ninety Years Wise (2004). She was elected a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and was the recipient of the Order of Canada in 1986. A gallery at the University of Toronto Scarborough was named in her honor.
