An outstanding survey of Latin American history, old as it is. The maps are outstanding. It gives an overview of the first 3 centuries of the colonial experience showing the differences between the three emphnaizing the effect of the histories of the European countries. Then there is excellent analysis of how independence proceeded in each country that evolved.
696. Latin America A Modern History, by J. Fred Rippy (read 26 May 1962) I think that to do a history of a continent in one volume means that you don't get a very good history of the individual countries.
