A bunch of kittens have snuck over to Lumberjanes from the boy’s camp and Barney comes to collect them…and reveal that they’re magical kittens! The kittens and Barney have to hide because the camp is being inspected by elder Lumberjanes. But before they can arrive, the elders and Rosie are kidnapped by a giant bird. The Lumberjanes, their counselor Jen, Barney, the magic kittens, and a surly camper from Zodiac cabin all set out to find the elders, riding on one of the kittens which has show more embiggened itself.

It’s been quite awhile since I read one of these volumes, which is probably for the best. At the time I found it jarring when the writers and artists changed, but now I’m just along for the ride. I still really enjoy the friendly vibes and the casual fantasy. Friendship is dealt with especially well when Hes, the camper from another cabin, just plain doesn't like the Lumberjanes. That's okay! It happens sometimes! I also really like the approach to gender at the end when Barney wants to join the girls camp. And the magical kittens, obvi.

Ahh! This is what I wanted from Lumberjanes all along!

This volume was so enjoyable I stayed up to 3:00am to finish it. The plot/story format gave so much room for marvelous character development, something I felt was lacking in earlier volumes. And, let's be honest her, I'm very biased when it comes to this: the two wlw characters finally had their own little side story and it. was. fantastic. Everything was so sweet and so real, and character interactions on the whole felt much more show more genuine rather than shallow.

In volumes one and two, things happened, scary stuff went down, characters went "Ahh!", and then smiled the next panel as they overcame the situation with no real problems. And finally, finally we have here real troubles the characters face and react to. Their fear doesn't go away in the next panel. Emotions build and build until it needs to be released in a realistic way! Characters rely on their friends/girlfriends (wiggles eyebrows) for support, because they need to.

All in all, I'm now really looking forward to reading more instead of feeling indifferent.

I adored every second of this second volume of Lumberjanes comics. As the girls continue to have the weirdest summer at camp ever (Velociraptors! In the outhouse!), they also learn the value of their friendship with each other. Fun, funny, and full of such positivity for all forms of femininity and the challenges of being a young woman, this comic series is so very much my thing.
I continue to be so incredibly excited about this series and wish I had had access to this kind of content growing up. I was especially excited to get some more background on the mysterious Rosie and learn more about the purpose of the Lumberjanes. But the real draw continues to be how amazing the girls and Jen are in every panel. Jen's mix of fierceness, exasperation, and the desire to protect her girls was highlighted in this book, to my delight - her driving = how I feel driving. I'm so show more glad that she is starting to demand answers and start embracing all the things that go along with being a Lumberjane.

But the most significant part for me was the conversation between Barney and Jo about being trans and being where you feel comfortable and what it means to be a Lumberjane. It is seriously great to see diversity in race, gender, and sexuality presented in such a positive way to kids in a manner that they can connect to. This series makes me wish I could afford to buy sets of it and mail it to everyone I know with kids or who enjoys graphic novels.
