Delos: Monuments & Museum is a companion guidebook covering the wonderful and historically significant ruins of Delos in the Cyclades Greece. The archaeological site of Delos is located on the western side of the small, barren island of the same name – itself a leisurely 40 minute boat ride from Mykonos to the east. In Greek mythology Delos was the birthplace of Apollo and as such a sanctuary and cult have been in existing since the Mycenaean period through to Roman times. At its height show more there were approximately 30,000 inhabitants living in this Hellenistic city focussed not just on religious activities but also on trade – Delos is centrally located between mainland Greece and its outer islands.

This guidebook was purchased after a recent day trip to Delos and proved useful in explaining the history of the site and describing important monuments and buildings – at the rear of the book is a useful map and recreation of the town and sanctuary precinct. Near the middle of the ruins lies the Delos Museum containing many of the important finds from the city. The guidebook also contains photos and description of the key artefacts. I understood the site and its history far better after reading this book post visit; though I’m sure reading the guide before arrival would make your visit all the more worthwhile.
