Some of you may recognize the name Carey Dean Moore. On August 21, 1979, in Omaha, Carey Dean (age 21) with his 14 year old brother took a taxi driven by Reuel Van Ness Jr. Moore tried to rob & then shot Van Ness. On August 27th, Moore killed cab driver, Maynard Hegeland. Both drivers were 47 years old, Korean war veterans & fathers. He didn't deny his guilt & spent 38 years on death row before being executed in 2018. The author & others against the death penalty met in 1995. She & Moore show more kept in contact, primarily through letters along with some phone calls & visits. This was not a romance but a friendship with Moore often discussing his faith.
