This is a quite long and sometimes tedious book. Yet, I give it a high rating because it is filled with very personal stories of the activities of the author and of the many scientists he met in researching this book. It is also filled with many superior references to the work of those scientists. And, finally it gives lavish praise to both those scientists that slogged through field work, making actual observations and measurements as well as those that analyzed samples in labs, analyzed show more data on computers and even those who built simulation models (and eome who could do several of these). Then, not satisfied to just write a good book on the development of island biogeography as a theory, Quammen goes on to show, with island biogography as the example, how theory may be applied, in this case to the management of nature reserves. Ah, that would be quite a lot to put in a short book. As to this being a review of the audio version, the narrator did quite well and none of the tedious parts mentioned above are particularly due to the naration. show less
I'm not positive what to think about this. I read the book, but can't find the book on goodreads, only this audio. I think that maybe I would have enjoyed this book more, had I listened to the podcast Limetown first. This book is a prequel to the podcast.
Huh? What was this book about? I guess I am not smart enough for this kind of "modern classic".
