About the Author

Writer Arturo Vivante was born in Rome, Italy on October 17, 1923. His family moved to England in 1938 because of Fascism. The British sent him to an internment camp in Canada while his family remained in England. Upon his release and before returning to Italy, he graduated from McGill University show more in 1944. He then earned a medical degree from the University of Rome and had a private medical practice for nine years. One day Nancy Bradish, an American visiting Rome, came into his office. They married in 1958 and moved to New York, where Vivante wrote his first short story for the New Yorker. He decided to give up medicine for a career in writing and wrote over 70 short stories for the New Yorker as well as articles for Vogue, London Magazine, The Southern Review, and The New York Times. He also wrote three novels and published a collection of short stories. He died on April 1, 2008 at the age of 84. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
