This is a very well thought out rendition of our first contact with other races from other stars, starting out with us achieving interstellar travel. It's on all of our minds, and Corcoran fleshes it out very well. And of course, along with meeting others, we also unfortunately run into "bad guys", who happen to be called "the others"! Ha! I didn't care to read every detail of every space battle, which may turn other peoples' cranks, but the big picture was top notch. I can't wait to move on show more to the next book in the series. Great job, PP! show less

The overall story told by the book was great, the element missing for me is the character development. It almost seems like each chapter of the book revolves around a different character, but after that chapter in some cases we never see that character again. Because of that there is no character development through the book. The book is very good at telling the military aspects of the story and you do not need to be a military person to enjoy the story. The ideas raised in the book about show more how we would handle the discoveries made and space travel seem realistic. My reason for a 4 star review instead of a 5 star on goes down to the character development. I just do not have a vested interest in any character. I have read the second book in the series and am currently reading the third and the character development gets better but is still lacking. show less

A good start

Good old fashioned space war between aliens and humans. I liked it a lot.

A few minor proofing errors (‘raise’ instead of ‘raze’). Nothing awful. Some of the characters are thin, but that might be solved in later volumes.

I will be buying the next book. Really the best recommendation I can give.
Ok Corcoran, you have me hooked. I can't wait to get my hands on book 3. This was a page turner, and I just couldn't wait to find out what happened next. The bad guys were CONSPICUOUSLY absent through much of the book, and it was great to see how they came onto the scene for the exciting end.
