The author was inspired by a goblet with monkeys on it in the Cloisters in New York City and further research she did in the British Museum.

When a pedlar falls asleep under a tree, the monkeys in it come down, play with the contents of his sack and even comb the pedlar's hair as he peacefully rests. He wakes to a quiet forest and wishes he could one day see a monkey.
A simple, pleasant story with colorful, breezy watercolors.

Like Caps for Sale, the pedlar takes a break to rest under a tree show more which, unknown to him, is inhabited by monkeys. The mischief they do is temporary; order is restored before the pedlar continues on his way. But this pedlar merely has happy dreams, perhaps enlivened by the monkeys playing his musical instruments. Of course, he may at some point wonder what happened to the raspberry syrup in his bottle. show less
