One of the better Eyewitness Travel Top Ten guides that I've read! It's not very in-depth, but does give plenty of concise and useful information. The color pictures are well-chosen and I really liked the included maps and walking tour recommendations. The content of this Top Ten guide is better than most of the the other Eyewitness Travel Top Ten guides I've read, but that may be because Rome just has so much to offer! The guidebook offers a surface-level glimpse at a wide range of show more subjects, from writers based in Rome to ancient emperors, to cheap eats and recommendations for bars and clubs per local. I also appreciated the Streetsmart section at the back that gives very practical information on how to navigate Rome.
Top Ten Rome Highlights:
1. Vatican City
2. The Pantheon
3. Roman Forum
4. Galleria Borghese
5. Colosseum and Imperial Fora
6. Musei Capitolini
7. Museo Nazionale Romano
8. Santa Maria del Popolo
9. Villa Guilia
10. Ostia Antica
In short, a good travel reference for a summary, high-level overview of Rome. show less

I always like using the Eyewitness Travel Top 10 guides as a starting point for travel research. The Naples and the Amalfi Coast version is another solid beginner offering. The guide is colorful and gives brief blurbs about ten related items per section. There is a bit of redundancy among the sections, but that's acceptable. The information is short and consumable. The Top Ten are: Palazzo Reale, Castel Nuovo, Dumo, Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Capodimonte, Certosa di San Martino, Pompeii & show more Herculaneum, Capri, Ravello, and Paestum. The book also includes a pull-out map.
A useful starter book but I would recommend getting something more comprehensive if you're looking for an in-depth look into the area, it's just not detailed enough to be the only guide for a trip. show less

(Cut and pasted from my review for the Venice version)
I used this and Rick Steves on our trip to Italy. I like the color pictures and the size of this one, but the information in Rick Steves is much more comprehensive and useful. I'd buy Rick's instead.
