- Earl V. Shaffer was the first person to "thru-hike" the Appalachian Trail from Mt. Oglethorpe, Georgia, USA to Mt. Katahdin, Maine, USA as a single continuous journey (in 1948). In 1965 he thru-hiked the Trail in a southerly direction, becoming the first person to make complete end-to-end hikes in both directions. He made another northbound thru-hike in 1998 at age 79, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his first historic 2,000 mile hike.

Reviews
"Walking with Spring" is an enjoyable trek if a bit matter-of-fact, but still, it's a great travelogue of the first ever through-hike of the Appalachian Trail (a bucket list item).
