New Modern Live Aid The Definitive 40 Year Story. by Unknown Author

This book made me incredibly sad.

In fact, it ran me through an emotional wringer, to be honest. Periods of anger, frustration, disgust, and shock. But also choked with empathy, with an undefinable joy that transcends simple happiness, and hope.

The first 40ish percent of the book covers two of the biggest public events, the forming of Band Aid and the release of "Do They Know It's Christmas?" up to the massive Live Aid concert in July 1985. I'm old enough to remember both very well. I was show more about 22 at the time. Of course, at 22, I was just excited for the parade of bands.

Four decades on, my priorities have changed somewhat.

The balance of the book covers a lot of the maneuvering that Geldof and Bono spearheaded to various charities and governments, along with an incredible team, to push a shocking amount of positive change. Love or hate the Boomtown Rats, love or hate U2, but these two frontmen are phenomenal agents of change, each with their own style.

I expected the balance of the book to be more of a slog, but honestly, the entire thing was riveting, leading to Live 8 in 2005, and then the resulting pushes and changes over the final two decades.

Along the way, there's a lot of heartbreaking moments, but honestly, this is a book of hope. This is a book that shows humanity coming together to be the best versions of ourselves, for the right reasons.

Somewhere just after the sections on the Live 8 concert and the following G8 Summit, Tony Blair reflects that he had never before or since seen so many world leaders come together to work to save those in need.

And, I fear, we may never see its like again. And that makes me incredibly sad.

Because, four decades on, the world's priorites have changed somewhat.

Ti-ping tien-kwoh 2 Volume Set: Ti-ping tien-kwoh: The History of the Ti-Ping Revolution, Including a Narrative of the Author's Personal Adventures: ... - East and South-East Asian History) by Augustus F. Lindley (2012-08-16) by Unknown Author

This history of the Taiping Civil War in China (1850-64) has to be one of the most harrowing accounts of warfare I've ever read. The U.S. Civil War was child's play by comparison. Augustus Lindley was an ex-British naval officer who joined the Taiping cause, lived in Taiping-controlled Nanjing, and fought on their side. His 2-volume, 800-page magnum opus alternates between shocking, cliffhanger adventures and battles and outraged polemics against the British Government, which intervened on show more behalf of the Qing Imperial forces (allegedly to protect British business and trade interests), thus turning the tide against the Taiping with superior weaponry that the Qing forces lacked. According to Lindley's own estimates (meticulously gathered from numerous contemporary accounts), as a result of this intervention alone in the final 2 years of the war, the combined British (and French) and Imperial forces were responsible for directly slaughtering 372,550 Taiping and non-combatant civilians; another 2,500,000 civilians were starved to death by deliberately blocking their access to food (total casualties for the war range between 20-30 million, overwhelmingly civilians). In walled city after city in the Yangzte River delta region, the Brits set up their heavy guns (cannons and howitzers) and bombarded everything inside - mostly non-combatants, women, and children whose only crime was happening to live there - fully aware they were killing many thousands. Any remaining survivors were driven out into an execution grounds for decapitation and dismemberment by Qing forces. show less

In diesem Buch der Reihe “Gute Nachricht für kleine Leute” begleiten wir den Waschbären Jan, der geradezu süchtig nach Süßigkeiten ist und der, um sein Bedürfnis zu stillen, auch nicht vor Lügen und Stehlen Halt macht.
Mir persönlich war das Verhalten von Jan und auch das seiner Eltern zum Teil etwas zu extrem dargestellt, es dient allerdings dazu einen Punkt klar rüber zu bringen: Jeder kann der Gier verfallen und diese Gier beginnt, unsere Gedanken und unser Handeln zu show more bestimmen.
In dem Buch wird klar, dass es genau diese Besessenheit von einer bestimmten Sache (in diesem Fall Süßigkeiten oder die Kaufsucht der Eltern) uns zur Sünde verleitet und wir unsere Bedürfnisse und Wünsche vor Jesus stellen, der jedoch als einziger eine Lösung für unser Problem bietet.
Mir gefällt, dass die Eltern ihre eigenen Probleme offen eingestehen und weder den Glauben an Jesus noch einen bestimmten Bibelvers als Wundermittel präsentieren. Durch Jesus’ Hilfe können wir Selbstbeherrschung erlernen und Versuchungen widerstehen. Einen Bibelvers alleine in der Tasche zu tragen reicht nicht, ist aber eine tolle Erinnerung, der in dieser Geschichte Vater und Sohn besonders verbindet.
Dieses Buch sollte definitiv mit den Kindern gemeinsam gelesen und besprochen werden. Es bietet meiner Meinung nach viel Potential als Vorlesebuch (mit praktischen Hinweisen für Eltern), als Selbstlesebuch für Kinder in den ersten Schuljahren ist es (ohne vorheriges oder anschließendes Gespräch) vielleicht weniger geeignet.
Dass die Bibel in dieser Buchreihe nicht Bibel, sondern “Buch der Bücher” genannt wird, habe ich mehrfach als Kritik gelesen. Ich muss gestehen, dass es mich auch irritiert hat und dass ich nicht weiß, welche Motivation dahinter steckt. Meinen Kindern war aufgrund der Inhalte sofort klar, dass es sich um die Bibel handelt, weswegen es uns nicht weiter gestört hat.
Ich empfehle das Buch trotz kleinerer “Störpunkte” definitiv weiter. In puncto Gier und Selbstbeherrschung können wir wohl fast alle noch etwas dazu lernen und an Fehlern gemeinsam mit seinen Kindern zu arbeiten, kann eine tolle Möglichkeit sein, Verbindung zu schaffen.
