The expressions of the sturdy bread and proud pineapple, the menacing candy bar and hapless granny smith apple, help get the message across about healthy eating. An important subject, this works really well as a read aloud to kids from kindergarten and up. I read to fifth graders and they loved it!
This book is a great example of an informational fantasy, because a group of personified foods use their quirky sense of humor to explain the importance of the food pyramid. In addition to creating a realistic story including conflict, the personified foods portray that each of the food groups is essential for one's diet on a daily basis. Overall, children will be engaged by the realistic and fun nature of the book.

I used this book as an introduction to a lesson on nutrition. I recommend it for younger students, up to 3rd grade because it is pretty short and with a simple story. It kept my first graders laughing and engaged! I would definitely use it again as a mentor text to another nutrition lesson in the future.
