Yosef Haim Brenner (1881–1921)
Author of Breakdown & Bereavement
About the Author
A novelist and short story writer, Joseph Brenner drew upon his years of wandering after leaving his traditional home in Novi Mlini (Ukraine) to focus on the problem of the uprooted fugitives from traditional Judaism. He exposed the anxieties, self-probing, and despair of the self-doubting Jewish show more intelligentsia. Such despair, ironically, infused his readers with a new creative life. Brenner is viewed as exercising powerful personal influence on his generation and the succeeding one. Brenner was killed during the riots in the spring of 1921 near Tel Aviv.
