This book has the slapdash feel of a high school yearbook, but does gives an overview of the history of the Rolling Stones that kept me turning pages briskly. Between the many comic strips with a variety of artists who vary greatly in their ability to capture the likenesses of the members of the band, are a bunch of goofily written and worshipful text pieces and tons of public domain photographs.

The historical rigor and editorial philosophy of the book is best summed up by this disclaimer show more included on the verso page: "most of the quotes in this book are translated from the French edition, and are therefore not phrased exactly like the original quotes in English." Isn't there a game people play with Google Translate that does this same thing for laughs? Fortunately, the translator here does a better job of covering up any truly ridiculous gaffes, but it doesn't inspire confidence as to how much of this "history" can truly be trusted. show less

Thoughts: As I HUGE Michael Jackson fan, when I saw this available on Edelweiss, I was definitely going to request to read and review this graphic novel/novel. And I'm so glad I did. This was a fantastic look at the life and legacy of Michael Jackson without all of the tabloid fodder. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because I was expecting a graphic novel...not a novel with graphics. Other than that, I loved the book. It didn't have much information that I didn't know was a superfan but it would be a good book for new or casual Michael Jackson fans.

De moorden, het 'allereerste detectiveverhaal', met z'n Holmes/Poirot-voorloper Dupin en diens ongeziene deductieve vermogens, is wellicht net dat verhaal dat zich het minst van al Poes vertellingen tot verstripping leent.
Juist omdat de (relatieve) magie van het verhaal steunt op het kortzichtige zoeken van de lezer zelf, die met behulp van de erg schaarse informatie al evenzeer als het Parijse commissariaat in het duister tast. De nogal fantasieloze invulling van Clod en Ceka, opnieuw zo show more braaf en gladjes, is spanningsloos en karakterloos. Alleen wie binnen een half uur een boekbespreking moet af hebben en niet zo gauw het verzamelde werk van E.A. Poe binnen handbereik heeft is hier mee gediend.

Ik liep dus zonet vlug even naar de kast - nam daar het goedkope salamanderpocketje van Het proces, en bladerde naar het einde van het boek - waar ik even verloren raakte in alle aanhangsels en onafgewerkte hoofdstukken die Kafka-boeken voor mij altijd (vroeger meer dan vandaag) al minder begerenswaardig maakten - vond tenslotte het einde van het 'officiële' verhaal en zag dat het einde van de strip daar mee overeenstemt (zonder evenwel de draai aan het mes ...). Ik bladerde door naar het show more begin, en zag dat ook daar overeenstemming is, maar dat de versie van Kafka ook daar zoveel verontrustender is - of ook wel: ronduit geniaal.

Geniaal genoeg in ieder geval om de er op gebaseerde strip, die braver, oppervlakkiger is en soms detail en expressie mist (zowel in tekeningen als in tekst) toch sterk genoeg te maken om met een glimlach aan de exponentiëel uitdeinende stripcollectie van de orl toe te voegen.
