In 1940 construction of the Auschwitz concentration camp began. Once complete, the complex consisted of three camps. During its operation, approximately 1.1 million people were murdered at Auschwitz making it the largest killing machine of Nazi Germany.
On January 27, 1945 the death camp was liberated by the Soviet army.
During the summer of 1947, the Polish parliament passed a law deeming Auschwitz as a museum. Since then, over 44 million people have visited the museum from all over the show more world.
