Really beautiful. This is the kind of exploration of gender I want to see more of in fiction -- it seems like cis authors don't have the insight to ask interesting questions about gender as a tool of the state, or gender as a component of society. Every time I see a crude and half-formed interrogation of gender in sci-fi from a cis author I think of the people who harassed Isabel Fall out of the public sphere, and all the stories of hers we never got to read.
2020 internet trolls bullied the brilliant writer off the internet, only leaving this publication. It's tragic because the short story has incredible potential, a cyberpunk fantasy leaving you wanting more. It's eccentric, authentic, and personal- yet distanced enough as if from a distant camera's panning lens. If this was released around the same time as Arcane s1 or s2, they'd have adoring fans and a movie deal!
