Written in the mid 19th century, volume one of this forgotten work of historical fiction is well researched and provides an interesting account of the beginnings of the infamous conspiracy of Catiline.

On the positive, the author paints a detailed picture of life in 1st century BCE Republican Rome. Unfortunately, the author's writing style is sometimes verbose to the point of tediousness. Nonetheless, the actual story line is quite good and worth the effort.
