- "A graphic novelist and comics illustrator who has garnered international acclaim, Jeff Lemire paid tribute to his rural roots in his remarkable trilogy, Essex County (Top Shelf Productions), and the world of comics responded with a plethora of major prizes and rave reviews. Lemire is considered an indie artist, but he has received plenty of mainstream recognition in his field. In 2008, he took the Joe Shuster Award for Best Canadian Cartoonist. That same year, Essex County won the American Library Association's prestigious Alex Award, which celebrates books for adults that also have teen appeal. He has also won multiple Eisner Awards, which are regarded as the Oscars of the comics world. The prolific writer and cartoonist is also the author of Sweet Tooth, a monthly comic series that centres on Gus, a little boy with antlers, and Jepperd, a hulking bounty hunter. In addition, Lemire writes the Superboy and Atom comic series for DC Comics, and has contributed to anthologies for Dark Horse and Image comics. He has also illustrated album covers for bands such as catl and Art Brut. Essex County was originally published in three parts; his fourth graphic novel, The Nobody (DC Comics/Vertigo), was published in 2009. Born and raised on a farm in Essex County, Ontario, Jeff Lemire now lives in Toronto." 2011 CBC Canada Reads blurb

What a dreary way to spend an hour or two. I was so disengaged from this awful story that I spent way too much time fixating on how often the art and the words don't seem to match. Was the artist also having trouble staying focused on the writing as he drew the script? (I see the copyeditor was having problems staying focused because he let a couple typos through. That may be due to the choice of the godawful typewriter font that takes up page after page after page.) Or maybe Lemire was show more working from a rough script and Snyder just didn't bother to look at the pictures closely as he slapped his final-draft drivel into the balloons and captions?
Most egregious example: In one scene we have a character spotting another character on the balcony of a "cape" house. In the illustration, there is no visible balcony on the Cape Cod style house. There is a balcony on the "geometric contemporary" house next to it, but no human figure is visible. Later illustrations in the sequence make it clear the characters are supposed to be meeting on the lower balcony on the front of the "geometric contemporary," a placement that then makes it unlikely for the protagonist to end the scene gazing intently at the backdrop behind the house, though I suppose he could be looking through the house entirely through two sets of windows.
(Oh, during the same scene, we have this awkward encounter: One character uses his right hand to hold the shoulder of the other [inference from a later picture says they are facing each other directly] and then sticks the pinkie of his left hand into his own right ear in order to display blood on the tip of his finger. This isn't impossible of course, but go ahead and act this out once or twice with a friend for a good chuckle.)
Other examples: One of the first illustrations in the book shows the protagonist spotting a balloon just a few dozen feet from a motel sign and palm trees while the text states, "The trees along this stretch of Florida are plain and bare. There were palm trees by our motel, but these look just like the trees at home to me." Later in the book we are told a mountaintop town is "situated on a lake" while the picture shows only a river or stream that's less wide than the length of a dump truck. An earlier picture of the same town from a higher and farther perspective also shows only a river and no lake.
Anyhow, this book is bad. If it is not too late for you, do not bother to read it. show less

“You know, this whole not-hearing-thing is really messing with my banter. I probably would have laid half-a-dozen real zingers on you by now.”
I have to admit I was not expecting much out of this; not after reading Fraction and Aja’s version of Hawkeye. I’m happy to say that I’m very pleased with Lemire and Perez’s Hawkeye.
Kate and Clint are working for S.H.I.E.L.D against a Hydra base to uncover a secret weapon. It’s nice to see Kate working as an agent/Avenger-in-training. show more What they don’t see coming is that the Hydra weapon is about to test their morals and loyalties; to each other and to S.H.I.E.L.D.
Half of this comic is dedicated to Clint’s not-so-nice childhood, flipping back and forth from past to present. It works in revealing how he got his name and the majority of his attitude. His older brother, Barney, also has a major role to play in both his past and present situations.
What I love the most about Clint’s character in this version is that he is deaf! Since he was first deafened in the 1980s by Mockingbird, writers have been only hinting at the fact or completely writing around it. I was worried when Fraction’s run ended and Hawkeye was picked up by Lemire that it would just be shoved under a rug again. Not only did he keep it in, Lemire highlighted it! Great job.
Anytime Clint and Kate are together there’s always a deep chemistry between them. Not necessarily romantic, but great partners. They banter back and forth (mostly on Clint’s bad names for his ‘special’ arrows), but they also have fallouts. Kate has a bad temper, and Clint is lazy when it comes to any kind of relationship.
Overall, I think Hawkeye fans will enjoy this one and I’m looking forward to the next! show less

This was an emotionally beautiful volume. Lemire and Perez had the difficult task of recreating Matt Fraction's Hawkeye from Matt Fraction's Hawkeye: My Life as a Weapon series, a series as well-known for its wit, honesty as much its moody purples.
And they did incredibly well.
I love Lemire's writing and forgot how good he is at writing heart-wrenching pieces until I read this book. I loved Perez's art in Clint's flashbacks, the hyper-colourful and watercolours worked so well to create a show more heightened feeling of nostalgia.
You don't have to have read Hawkeye: My Life as a Weapon to read this because this is Clint's backstory. This is how Clint became Hawkeye.
I can't wait to read the second volume. show less

Sets a Lovecraftian tone for what is to come, but isn't much fulfilling on its own.
A geologist comes to a remote island lighthouse to investigate a mysterious deep hole that has appeared in the rocky soil. He repeatedly flashes back his mother's mysterious death as he deals with the mysterious lighthouse keeper. Birds mysteriously flock around the hole. Mysterious things happen, like eyeballs popping up everywhere. Or are they?
But what's it all mean? It's a mystery.
This reminds me too much show more of Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach Trilogy, which starts cool and mysterious -- and features a lighthouse to boot -- but never ends up going anywhere. I'm very pessimistic about this getting better. show less
