My Name is not Refugee was a great book. This is a book I have read several times to students in the RYP program. I really like the detail of the artwork as well as the text in this book. Also, I love the message of this book the best. It allows students who may be refugees to understand that they are not identified by where they come from. There is more things that define who they are. I highly recommend this book, not only to ELLs, but to any student because it helps kids understand show more everyone is different and that we are not defined by where we came from. show less
This short and sweet story of a young child and his mother leaving the country as refugee talks about the experiences and emotions they will face as they leave their home and travel to a new home. This story uses simple language and descriptions that gives enough understanding for young learners without being innapropriate or too intense. I would use this book in PreK-Kinder to be able to give some insight about the lives of other children in the world and build world empathy.
It's a cool concept. I didn't personally find the poems all that engaging. But I think it's done well.
This story is about a little boy and his mother who are on a journey. As his mother gets him ready for their journey she gives him different scenarios and asks him questions on how he would handle things that they would experience. It seems like she was trying to get his mind off of the thought of leaving a familiar place but prepare for what was to come on their journey and new home. When they did make it, his mother let him know that he would be called refugee but to remember that was not show more his name.
I like the message the book the gave but I would have liked to know where they came from and where they were traveling to. show less
