couldn’t put it down
Aside from bathroom visits, food, and the bare minimum required amount of sleep to successfully teach my students, this book had me in a choke hold. I’m two books in across 48 hours and I think I figured out what it is. The characters feel real. The choices they make and are forced into aren’t ones I’m thinking, “that’s such a plot device”. It’s rare to have an MMMMM where the characters are flushed out, their dilemma seeming real, and the unfolding of show more plot done pretty well. My only point of issue is the timeline. I cannot figure out how long it’s been but I think it’s only been like 3 weeks for all the characters. Wildness!
Highly recommend if the synapsid catches your eye. It’s true to read and enjoyable! show less

Overall reco:
There appears to be a formula to N. Slaters writing (having finished Woodland appeal earlier this year) and I am down for it. I liked this one better than Woodland appeal and I'm not sure why.
I was looking for something that would feel hopeless and impossible and just nothing can go right no matter what the characters do and this book show more nails it. I feel like N Slater is good at just tapping into the deep anxiety in me and painting a world where it feels like nothing will work out. The bad guys are too strong and are too many steps ahead and the good guys can just never win.
That vibe is what I've been searching for this month, something to just grab me and beat me down and make me really feel it.
The characters felt interesting, and got even more so as we pulled back the layers. Luca seemed to be the focus of a lot of stuff but I'm actually really loving Blake. The Alpha's are great and all but really the Omega's are carrying the story for me, and I find myself, currently, wanting more of Blake.
The Spice is SPICY! I only highlighted one line in the book and it was the quote at the top of this review and honestly that's how I feel about N Slaters books I think. I almost felt like spice every chapter and sure that's because of what was happening but god damn. show less

Overall reco:
This book felt like it dragged a bit and I kept having to put it down because I would get so upset at the world. To be fair, I had been looking for exactly this kind of vibe, there it feels like the world is against the characters and nothing they do matters. N. Slater is very good at that. I felt the same way about Woodland Appeal/An Omega's show more Preference, where there is the constant threat of nothing is ever going to work out.
That said, it felt like this book stagnated. We resolved the cliffhanger of the first book and then it just kind of sat there. The story folded in on itself several times and I just felt like I was running in circles with the characters and while that can be something enjoyable, to really feel the drama and how a character feels 'stuck' the effect felt more of a slog this time. I kind of hit an empathy wall I think with the characters, as I started to get very annoyed when I saw the same scene's happening several times. It felt a lot like it was being dragged out, and I'm sure it kind of was? Like the author probably wanted the reader to feel how the world was dragging out of the characters and while I get that, it made for a very frustrating experience.
Honestly, I don't know how these a/b/o dicks didn't fall off from overuse. It felt like almost every chapter mentioned or had a sex scene. I rather expect that in a lot of the MPREG storylines but damn.
If you are looking for drama, drama, and more fucking drama with copious amounts of sex, this is a good series. Personally, I liked this more than An Omega's Preference even thought I couldn't finish it.
(Other Notes)
I will admit that I technically didn't finish this... I got to one of the last chapters. I read the chapter of the villan's POV and just decided to stop there. Maybe I'll come back and read the final chapter an book, but there is too much internal agita with this story. And at the time I wanted to be done with it. I was in a stressful situation outside of the books and I just needed to step away. show less
