Personally, if I’m going to read a book with politics as a main theme, satire is my preferred genre. This was an amazing book that had me giggling and laughing, while also highlighting the importance of grassroots movements in the face of bureaucracy. The story was woven together nicely, with great character, incompetent government, and real issues facing natural habitats. Weber has a talent for making issues one might face in real-life entertaining and less frustrating for the reader show more (although at times very frustrating for the MCs). You’ll easily get lost in the pages of this book, and I finished it in the space of an afternoon. Highly recommend! show less
Reading this with the state of the world right now only made it more chilling. Please pay attention to the trigger warning - I had to put this down a few times to ground myself because you just get so wrapped up in the story it's easy to forget this is fiction and not a peek into a future that might be not too far off on the horizon. I loved Lucy - she's strong, smart, and hasn't lost her humanity despite the world falling apart around her and the worst of human cruelty surfacing and show more surrounding her. This might be a novella, but it really packs a punch, and the world building and characters are so well done. Hats off to Weber for giving me chills in 90+ degree weather! show less
Oof. Talk about an alternate history that packs a punch. With a dystopian twist, we're tossed right into the story from page one, and from there it's like watching a movie unfold in front of the reader. This takes one small what if - and like a ripple effect, the world we know no longer exists. There are some truly dark moments, but also brief flashes of hope. With great pacing and a few edge-of-your-seat scenes, you won't want to put this down once you start.
Thought provoking, Chilling, Enthralling!
I personally would consider this novella what I call a slow burn, it was interesting & captivating to start and suddenly before you knew it bam it had become a full blown inferno!
I absolutely fell in love with the main characters of both Lucy & Irma I kind of picture them like the angel & devil sitting on your shoulders in my opinion both are necessary for survival in a post-apocalyptic world to a certain degree. I would never want to lose my humanity show more but my main purpose and role would be the safety of my children much as Lucy, therefore I would always try to first make some sort of contract and see if other people were friendly & or open to our groups joining but if they were not and they were a threat to my children or their safety you can bet your butt I'd gutt em like a fish! Anything for the lives of my children they are not only my children but the future of the human race!
This novella is very thought provoking as you can see from my last comments. It makes you wonder what you would & wouldn't be able to do to survive, to do to another human being, for the survival of your children, what kind of & how much abuse you could take for the safety of your children and so much more. Will our world truly end like this? Has this already begun? Earthquakes, tsunamis, wildfires, more frequent & intense drought, heat waves, storms, melting glaciers, rising sea levels & warming oceans as well as ocean acidification! Is it to late to save our planet as well as our wildlife?
This story was full of action, adventure and also character driven. However it could be considered a tad on the violent side and also be put in the "horror" category for certain aspects as well. Also something that I loved was T.C. Weber is very graphic in describing some scenes I could see perfectly in my mind what I was reading and it was brilliantly bloody! Bravo
I will be rating this a 5/5 star I loved the storyline, the characters were well developed, I couldn't wait to find out what happened next & was intrigued & impressed with how the story developed throughout I also loved the way the story ended.
I would like to thank LibraryThing, Early Reviewers, Solstice Publishing as well as T.C. Weber for the ARC of this very interesting and thought provoking novella. I wrote this review by choice and was under no obligation to do so, all thoughts & opinions are my own. show less
