" Britten," said Sir George Solti, "was an operatic genius. His departure has left an enormous emptiness in the world of music and in the lives of his friends."

Talking of Britten opera A Midsummer Night's Dream, Bernard Haitink remarked that one might find the score "a little thin if you divorce it from the libretto, but the setting is so masterly that in the opera house, it must be wholly convincing."
