The Orla Award is a Danish literary prize for children's and young adult books named after the main character in Ole Lund Kirkegaard's children's book Orla Frøsnapper. The prize was awarded for show more the first time in 2005 and is given to the year's best publications in a number of categories based on an online poll for children and young people. Until 2007, you could vote for the ten best-selling publications of the year in each category. From 2008, voting was open to six titles in each category, nominated by both children and adults and based on lending statistics from libraries. Winners are chosen by children's juries in all four categories.
The prize was not awarded in 2011. From 2012, the four categories became one with 12 nominees. The aim was to reach children aged 7 to 12, who are the target group for both the children's libraries' book dissemination at www.pallesgavebod.dk and for the older children on DR Ramasjang.
Behind the award is the Danish Radio's Children & Youth Department and the campaign Læselyst, which is organised by the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Family and Consumer Affairs. Also participating are the Danish Publishers' Association, the Danish Booksellers' Association, the Danish School Librarians, the Danish Librarians' Association and the websites Boggnasker.dk and Ask Olivia. show less
