Henry Costin was a former British Corporal who accompanied explorer Percy Fawcett on several of his expeditions to the Amazon. Bored with his life in the army, in 1910 he answered an advertisement for adventurous men that Fawcett placed in a newspaper. Costin was short and stocky, extremely fit, and a first class marksman. He and Henry Manley would prove to be Fawcett's most capable assistants. Fawcett, Manley and Costin all fought in WWI. Fawcett wanted Costin to join another expedition after the war, but Costin had recently married and stayed home.
