Wang the Merchant is Wang Lung's second son; he was sly and crafty back in _The Good Earth_, and has taken that much further in _Sons_, controlling the town grain markets and always looking to expand. Like Ebenezer Scrooge, he doesn't really have any ideas for what to do with his money once he gets it; but he's much more relaxed and laid-back than Scrooge was, and one gets a sense that Wang the Merchant is genuinely happy.
