In 1966 the Shibundo publishing company in Tokyo began an unprecedented series of monthly publications on Japanese art entitled "Arts of Japan." Prepared with the cooperation and editorial supervision of the Agency for Cultural Affairs and the three great national museums in Kyoto, Nara, and Tokyo, the series is written by leading Japanese scholars for a general audience, each issue devoted to a single aspect of Japanese art. Now totaling over 130 issues, this monumental series presents a comprehensive detailed picture of Japanese art unequaled in Japanese publishing history-and now available to the English-reading public. Entitled the Japanese Arts Library, the English edition is being translated by scholars of Japanese art under the overall editorial direction of John Rosenfield of Harvard University Abundantly illustrated and adapted for the Western reader, the Japanese Arts Library is an outstanding event in English-language publishing.
