I just noticed on the bottom of the main page it says "You are in green mode." What does that mean? Are there other modes?

Red, of course.
It has to do with how non-members are treated. During periods of very high traffic we sometimes turn on "non-member throttling" (aka "red" mode). When that's on, non-members can't see all pages, but only some. Other pages send them to the home page and tell them it'd be great if they signed up :)
