I'm eager for this thread to begin as about two weeks have already passed in October. Hopefully, lahochstetler won't mind.

Please post the book covers of the books you're reading that have spooky covers. If you COMPLETE your book before the end of the month, it will be eligible for the CONTEST that's about to take place. We are going to vote for the book with the SPOOKIEST BOOK COVER. Let's get this all set up and running before the onset of Halloween!

Here's the way back to the main thread.

BOO! (Did I scare you?)

I'm slowly working my way through The War of the End of the World by Mario Vargas Llosa, which is superb so far:

I've read The Lantern by Deborah Lawrenson. Obviously I find something spooky/haunting about the cover:)

COMPLETED

I also completed The Suspicions of Mr Whicher as a shared read - the cover on my edition isn't particularly spooky so I hope that lahochstetler posts their cover.

Patrick McGrath's books are such fun to read. They're all a wee bit creepy, but, oh, so good. This month I'm reading The Grotesque...

Rules:

So that we only have one winner, I will give the award to anyone but myself who posts his book cover first (in case of a shared read) and wins the vote at the end of the month of the spookiest book cover. If you don't know how to post a book cover, just ask for help on this thread.

If you're not currently reading a book with a spooky cover, it's not too late. You've got at least two weeks left before the end of the month. Children's books and YA books can be used for this contest as well. Go raid your kids' bookshelves! Read as many as you can... :)

ETA: In case of the same work with a different cover for a different edition, each edition can be a separate entry. The good thing about that scenario is that you can enter the contest and still have a shared read! Think about it...

I read Sweetly for this challenge, it was a fairly average sort of read, a YA retelling of Hansel and Gretel.

As I confessed on my own thread, I actually find this cover rather attractive; but I know enough people who are totally freaked out by spiders to feel I can legitimately list it:

I am going to read this vintage mystery for my spooky cover entry:

The Bat by Mary Roberts Rinehart - Completed

I also read Unwind by Neal Shusterman, but I'll leave it for a bit to see if CitizenJoyce wants to enter it, she listed it first, I just joined in.

. COMPLETED

I was a little surprised to see how similar the cover for A Tale Dark and Grimm is to the cover in #6 above (Sweetly) - and they are both somehow associated with Hansel and Gretel.

I've forgotten how to post pictures. I don't I'll get it correct, but let me see . . .

I've put Carol O'Connell's Bone by Bone up for the challenge

and completed Carol O'Connell's The Judas Child for the challenge.

Thank you, Madeline, for starting the thread. I've been under the weather- ugh! Anyway, here's my contribution, The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher.

So sorry you haven't been feeling well, Laurie. I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks, I am definitely feeling better. I'm also adding this book to the wiki, Cargo of Eagles, by Margery Allingham. I don't know if the creepiness truly comes across in the picture, but I had to turn this book upside down on my nightstand, because I can't take it staring at me.

#14 That is a very spooky cover for that particular book. I have the plain green penguin crime classic cover which is not at all scary. I can't remember if skulls with scary eyes feature in the book or not...

I love that Wolves of Willoughby Chase cover, what did you think of the book?

Oct 23, 2011, 10:19 am

>23 elkiedee: I loved it, Luci--somehow I missed this one when I was little, though I did read another Aiken book not realizing there was a series. Creepy and satisfying at the same time. Now I'm trying to decide whether my 8 year old is too young for this one.
