Founded in 1802 the library is still housed in its original, purpose-built building in the centre of Manchester, though it now only occupies the upper floor. (The bottom half is occupied by a bar called The Bank, after former tenants, The Bank of Athens. The entrance to the library is to the side of the building on Charlotte St. Entry is by buzzer. The library is open Monday through Saturday. Normally 9.30-17.30, closing an hour earlier on Monday and Friday. On Saturday the hours are 11:00-15:00. The library is open to the public and has a gallery and cafe.
Members enjoy access and borrowing to the collection of 25,000 volumes, mostly 19th Century, periodicals and newspapers, a reading room, free wifi, a quiet place to work and a separate dining menu. - Added By

The Portico has recently embarked on the Portico United project (https://www.theportico.org.uk/reuniting). The project will see the library occupying all three floors of the building for the first time in over 100 years. Plans include a Northen Bookshop, Event space and expanded cafe on the ground floor as well as much needed accessibility improvements and maintenance of the Grade II listed building.
