Description:
The Chase Center on the Riverfront was originally a shipbuilding warehouse used by the Dravo Corporation during World War II. Originally known as the N4 Building, it was part of a complex of buildings at the shipyard. After sitting idle for many years, the building and land surrounding it were purchased by the Pettinaro Company in the 1980s. In 1998 it opened as the First USA Riverfront Arts Center to host world-class exhibitions in the beginning of the riverfront revitalization efforts of the Riverfront Development Corporation.
The facility also included the largest ballroom in the state at that time. The Wood Company managed the food and beverage operation. From August 1998 through May 2002, the First USA Riverfront Arts Center hosted seven exhibitions, including: Nicholas & Alexandra: The Last Imperial Family of Czarist Russia, Splendors of Meiji: Treasures of Imperial Japan, Discovering Dinosaurs: The Great Exhibition, and Syria: Land of Civilizations.
From July 2002 through October 2004, the Art Museum occupied the galleries and office space while their main building on Rockford Parkway in Wilmington was undergoing a major reconstruction. In January 2003, the building’s name was changed to Bank One Center on the Riverfront. Sodexo, a food and facilities management services company, purchased the Wood Company in January 2004 and took over catering and event management responsibilities.
Renovation of the facility began in January 2005 to transition the facility into a multi-purpose special event facility, with completion and a grand rededication celebration in November 2005. The facility’s name changed to Chase Center on the Riverfront. Today the facility is host to all types of events from small meetings to large multi-day conferences, social galas, weddings and celebrations to community events, tradeshows and public shows bringing groups of people together from all over the region.
