Nine year old Will is looking forward to attending a summer dance with the older children, but his older brother Marty has other plans in store for him. Marty lays the stage for fright by telling Will the story of infamous pirate Captain Crow, who spent his life searching for the nine year old cabin boy who bested him in a fight. Legend says even after his death, Crow's ghost continues to search for the cabin boy along the coast of Duncade, Ireland, and any nine year old boys in his path will be kidnapped to his ship. Luckily for Will, his parents insist that he and Marty take a route to the dance that does not travel along the rocks known as Captain Crow's Teeth. But events take a turn for the worse when Will wins a contest at the show more dance and gets named "Captain Crow's Official Cabin Boy". When the dance ends, Marty suddenly has an excuse not to take Will home on his bike, forcing Will to traverse alone at night the dangerous rocks haunted by Captain Crow in order to get home by curfew. When the rocks begin to glow, Will wonders if it is phosphorescence or really the evil Captain Crow. But when Will gets “haunted” by Crow’s ghost, it turns out to be Marty attempting to frighten him. Ironically, Marty is the one who ends up learning a lesson in fear and humility, when he finds himself trapped in the rocks and believes himself to be in danger from the legendary ghost. Will winds up saving the day for both of them and finding unexpected courage. show less
Just fine for a young reluctant reader. I think pirates are over-rated and over-used, but this is mostly just funny.
This book follows the story of two brothers, Marty and Will, as they go to a dance while on summer vacation. The town they are staying in is rumored to be haunted by a pirate, Captain Crow, who is searching for the cabin boy who put an ax in his head. He is rumored to come out on nights where the rocks in the lake glow to look for the nine year old boy. Marty, the oldest brother, tells this story to his brothers to scare them before bed but seems to believe in it a little himself. In the end Marty tries to scare Will by hiding in the rocks and making him believe that Captain Crow is chasing him. Marty gets stuck and must ask for Will's help and admit that he was tricking him but he sees the glow and starts to believe that the pirate show more really is after them! They run home and eventually Will explains that the glow in simply phosphorescence, not the pirate.
This was a simple and fun book for a new reader or a pirate fan. The concept and characters are simple but they are funny and appeal to the age group that will be reading it. There are plenty of silly jokes that are perfect for young readers, in the style of Captain Underpants. The author has a good reputation and I look forward to reading other books by him.
I also liked the accompanying artwork. The pictures often made me laugh, especially the one when the two boys are about to leave for the dance with their spiked hair. show less

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was a fun and enthralling little book. I think it would be especially appealing to a young reader with older siblings, as Colfer has included a brotherly bonding aspect to the story. It has fantastical aspects to it (with the pirate "ghost") but the spookiness is eventually explained by something that happens in the real world. I can't wait to recommend this to some of my 2nd and 3rd grade students.
Hilarious and entertaining early chapter book accompanied with just as funny illustrations. Everyone can sympathize with Walt and hope he makes it through the night and back home by 10:30 safely. A fun read which should be enjoyed by children of all ages.
Two young boys travel to small town by the ocean, where, legend has it, a ghost lurks, captain Augustin Crow. When the rocks known as his Teeth glow at night, people say the ghost comes back, looking for the cabin boy who killed him. During the summer at the coast, the boys go to dances, and venture into other growing up occasions, with the legend always at the back of their minds.
The Woodman family goes to the coast for vacation and emotional sibling abuse. Coming of age with a supernatural pirate element.
Early Chapter Book
I read this book because I had a student last year who only would read Eoin Coulfer. In fact the only writing we got fromhim was a persuisive essay to Eoin to change the marriage in his Artemis Fowl books (we found out later there was no real marriage just in our student's head). Having read no Coulfer and seeing this on the list I picked up Captain Crow's teeth. Ugh. No character development and stupid plot points. It was like My three SOns meets Scooby Doo. This is an award winner? I'd read a million Junie B books before I read this to my students. The plot is simplistic and predictable and show more the chgaracters are recycled for decades. More stupid than engaging at all points. I hope Artemis fares better. show less
