The main themes of “Elmer and the Rainbow” are helping other people, sharing, friendship, and being positive. In the book when the rainbow loses its colors Elmer the elephant wants to help it get its beautiful colors back. Which children could see this and if some of their friends are sad and not as bold or bubbly as they usually are they can help them get back to their happy selves. As well as sharing the story shows that since Elmer has lots of “colors” such as big emotions he shares them with the other elephants. With this book showing that he is able to share his happy emotions with others, children can think they should be able to do the same thing and keep their friends happy. Could also show how friendship is important show more because Elmer has his friends help him bring the colors back to the rainbow, which is showing the child if they aren’t making their friend or friends happy by themselves they could ask their other friends to help cheer their friend up together. Positivity in the story shows the importance of even if the friend is going through something negative the friends can help think of positive things to help the child or children to get through rough times in their lives. Letting their friend or friends know everyone goes through a rough time in their lives and it is okay to do so, as long as they can think of something positive along the way in the situation they may be going through. Overall the main themes of the story are good ones because all the emotions that everyone feels are important and need to be talked about. show less
