Etude riche et passionnante sur l'évolution des moeurs et de la notion de civilisation en Europe (notamment en France et en Allemagne), depuis le Moyen-Age jusqu'au XVIIIe siècle. Evocation intéressante, quoique rapide, du lien entre le développement des "autocontraintes" et les théories freudiennes.
Des extraits issus des traités de bonne conduite des siècles passés sont truculents pour le lecteur d'aujourd'hui.

De vertaling uit het Duits is zeer stroef. De auteur komt in dit eerste deel voornamelijk tot het besluit dat maatschappelijke dwang zich geleidelijk omgezet heeft in zelfdwang in de westerse samenleving. Dit is heel aannemelijk en goed onderzocht. Het kan zelfs een verklaring zijn van het veel voorkomend onaangepast gedrag van niet-Europese migranten in het Westen.
