Prelim Review: I haven't read a romantic suspense novel in a long time. At least not one that didn't involve the paranormal in some way. EDGE OF SIGHT, and St. Claire's other "Guardian Angelinos" books, caught my interest however so I decided to take a chance. I'm very glad I did, I forgot what its like to have my heart pounding in my chest, uncertain how the hero (or heroine) will overcome the bad guy since they are human and not supremely gifted.

On a sidenote, are the men in Boston like this? 'Cause honestly I'm thinking I need to go get myself caught up in some murderous plot and have an Angelinos of my very own protect me...

Edge of Sight
4 Stars

Series note: The Guardian Angelinos is a spin-off of The Bullet Catchers. However, any connection between the series is superficial at best and mainly consists of some name dropping, which makes no difference to the plot.

Edge of Sight has a well-developed suspense story and a sweet romance although Zach and Sam aren't as compelling as some of St. Claire's other couples.

Zach is physically and emotionally scarred after his experiences as an army ranger. While his vulnerabilities do engage the reader on a certain level, the tortured hero vibe is lacking. Moreover, his behavior toward his adoptive family and toward Sam make him appear sullen and churlish. He does manage to recognize the error of his ways and redeem himself by the end.

Sam is also a conflicted heroine. On the one hand, she stands her ground with Zach and calls him on his past behavior rather than falling straight back into his arms after he broke her heart. On the other hand, she has lost confidence in herself and seems incapable of making any decisions whether right or wrong.

The best aspect of the book is the plot revolving around an assassin targeting Sam after she witnesses a murder. The action scenes are tense and exciting and the villains a diverse lot. St. Claire is skilled at misdirection and Edge of Sight is no exception. Apart from one or two co-conspirators, the villains caught me by surprise, especially the assassin. The motivation for the original crime is a little unclear but does not detract from the overall reading experience.

The Rossi/Angelino family dynamics is another highlight - they love, they fight and they eat. Zach's snarky sister Vivi and FBI cousin Marc each have their own books and I look forward to reading them soon. ( )

A good romantic suspense with an exciting ending. I liked how the hero and heroine moved through their issues and how this family worked together. I look forward to the rest of the series. After Samantha witnesses a murder she goes to hide with a friend whose brother Zach was an old lover and ends up under his protection. ( )

This romantic suspense, my first from Ms. St. Claire, was a cut above the average murder mystery, the first in a new series featuring the Angelino family. I would actually rate it a solid 3.5. I couldn't decide whether to round up or down, but regardless, I recommend this for fans of Roxanne St. Claire (or suspense stories featuring a proud, hunky man who is humbled by the love of a strong-willed, but adoring, female). I would call their relationship more lust than love throughout much of the story, and there are several scenes detailing their physicality without leaving much to the imagination, one at an oddly inopportune moment that made me smile and shake my head.

Zach Angelino, former military, and his sister Vivi, newspaper reporter, have to spring into action to protect Samantha, who is his lover and her good friend after she witnesses a professional hit at work. Her image is captured on the security camera, which the shooter confiscates. I correctly guessed one of the pieces to the mystery puzzle almost right away, but a few other pieces didn't fall into place until near the climatic ending. I especially enjoyed the parts featuring the whole Angelino clan: a cop,a former FBI agent and gunshop owner, a therapist, plus a computer hacker. Then there is Uncle Nino, an elderly Italian man who likes to meddle in his family's doings. Vivi wants to form a family business--professional bodyguard & investigative service-- "The Guardian Angel(inos), and she certainly has the right type of relatives to do that! Their interactions bring some added interest to the storyline and will most likely be recurring in the rest of the series.

I found the first part of the book to move a bit slowly, but the last third kept me intrigued until the end. I would probably read the next in the series. THREE & 1/2 STARS ( )

Really liked this on. Edge of your seat with romance in the middle. ( )
